YOKOHAMA — A junior high school teacher has been suspended for six months after he earned some 1.4 million yen (about $13,000) in additional income through a delivery side job, education authorities in this city south of Tokyo said.
The Yokohama Municipal Board of Education on Sept. 29 took disciplinary action against a 53-year-old teacher at municipal Okano Junior High School in the city’s Nishi Ward, after he was found to be earning extra money through a bicycle delivery service. His actions violate the Local Public Service Act, which bans local public employees from taking on second jobs.
According to the education board, the teacher engaged in delivery work between July 2019 and June 2020 for a total of 255 days, earning a sum of about 1.4 million yen. He even continued the second job while the school was temporarily closed earlier this year as part of new coronavirus infection prevention measures.
The teacher also illicitly received a commuter allowance for three years beginning in fiscal 2017 by falsely reporting that he was commuting by bus, when he was in fact commuting by bicycle or other means.
“I wanted to set a goal so I could maintain my physical strength,” he reportedly told officials.

The former is characterised by a shortbread-like base and smooth custard filling, whereas the latter tends to be more of a dessert with its burnt caramel top and puff pastry base….
