‘Runner’ documentary: Join live Q&A with star, director

The inspiring documentary “Runner” has been a hit with viewers who accessed it virtually through Freep Film Festival and the Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon.
So on Monday, the festival is hosting a live, virtual Q&A with the film’s subject, Guor Maker, and its director, Bill Gallagher. Free Press sports columnist Shawn Windsor will moderate.
“Runner” tells the story of Maker, who escaped captivity in his native, war-torn Sudan, where eight of his nine siblings were killed in that country’s civil war. He eventually landed in the U.S., where he began running for his high school track team and later competed in college. Maker (formerly known as Guor Marial) then went on to qualify for the 2012 Olympics — but not without further setbacks and challenges.
The live conversation will be hosted on this page, and also archived here. Viewers can watch it live on the Free Press’ Facebook feed and the Freep Film Festival Youtube page. It will begin at 7 p.m. and last approximately 30 minutes.
The film itself is still available for rental. Details are below.
